good close look. What is wrong with it? So here is how the story goes. I was
blessed to be able to go to the Indiana State Fair with some friends a couple
of weeks ago. While we were there, I was given some seeds/ a kit to grow my own
“Pizza Garden”, complete with tomato, banana pepper, oregano, and basil. With
the guidance of my Uncle and Grandpa (I know next to nothing of growing plants
from seeds!), I excitedly took a Sunday afternoon to swell the little seed
protection pellets, mix the dirt, plant the seeds, and water them. I left them
outside to get sunlight and checked on them every evening to give them water. I
knew that I would have to bring them inside as soon as they sprouted so our
lovely twin fawns would not see them as a delectible appetizer. One day, while
skyping my best friend in Honduras, I gasped as I saw my three pots. All three
had a hole right in the middle of the moist dirt. All three had the seed
pellets exposed and filleted open. All three had all of the seeds missing. I
could not stop from laughing/crying! It was a pretty hysterical sight! My first
planting experience as “Master Gardener” gone to nothing…<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-fareast-language: ES-TRAD; mso-no-proof: yes;">As I thought of all of the Biblical
connotations to this story, I drew a few conclusions. The story of the Sower
came to mind (Matthew 13) along with several others, but you know what?
Sometimes, I think that God just gives us experiences like that to remind us to
laugh at the shortness of life on this earth! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-fareast-language: ES-TRAD; mso-no-proof: yes;">Ironically enough, that Sunday
we focused on time. On the way to church that Sunday, the song by Steven Curtis
Chapman of the “Glorious Unfolding” came on the radio. Take some time to listen
to the lyrics! They are beautiful. In the car, God was speaking to me through
the lyrics of not forgetting that our time here on this earth is just a small
piece of eternity. Gods kingdom is starting now! God pushed that thought in a
little further when we listened to the podcast by Andy Stanley about time in
Sunday School. His focus was on Ephesians 5:15-16 and about how we are called
to redeem the time by focusing on what is truly important. THEN that night in
my devotions, I opened up Jesus Calling to find (I will give you one guess…)
Ephesians 5:15-16. When God hits me with a concept three times in one day, I
think that it is time that I listen! Time
is precious! One minute we can be growing and the next minute we can be
squirrel food! (For all of my IWU cohorts… I bet it was Phillip the squirrel!) Or
if you prefer the Biblical analogy, we could be dried up, burnt grass. I pray
that my every moment, I would live for something that counts- SomeONE that
counts! That is my prayer for each of you as well!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

live- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because
the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s
will is.” (Ephesians 5:15-17, NIV)<o:p></o:p></span></div>

What do Moses, Gideon, Namaan, David and I have in common? A. Weakness.)<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">

the words of one of the ladies that I used to work with, “Wowza!” God is moving
and speaking! As many of you know, I was praying for a “big thing.” I was
praying and trusting that God would bring in my full funding by July 4, 2014.
Unfortunately (or fortunately…), He chose not to, but keep reading! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I
started out yesterday reading about how Jesus is the vine and we are the
branches. We must stay connected to Him because He invites us to share a
relationship with Him and God the Father the same as He has with His Father.
Don’t read over that too quickly. He says “As the Father has loved me, so have
I loved you. Now remain in my love.” (John 15:9, NIV). This is the love that
drove God to send a dove to hover over Jesus after He was baptized and to tell
Jesus and the crowds of His identity with a thundering voice! This is the love
that drove Jesus to willingly and painfully be murdered on a cross. This is the
same love that rose Jesus from the dead! In that chapter, Jesus continues to
say that God will give us whatever we ask in Jesus’ name. In my small vision of
the world, I took that to mean my funding. He gave me so much more! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In
WGM’s chapel, the speaker shared on the character of David, how he learned to
ask for great things from God. He went from being a small shepherd boy to a
great warrior to a king, because of His reliance on God. God was his refuge,
his shelter in the storm. David thirsted after Him. Again, I took this to be a
little looksee of the funding that I was going to receive that day. I thanked
God. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">When
the note came that my funding had not fully come in, I was crushed. I was
tempted-very tempted- to scream and God and be disappointed in His “unfaithfulness”.
I did cry before Him. This is what He said. Little by little, He let me know
that I had been focusing on the wrong things. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><b>John</b>
Chapter 15: I focused on what God would give us materially. He focused on love
shown in obedience. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><b>David</b>:
I focused on the greatness that David became. He focused on the fact that he
sought after God. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In
addition, in my devotions truths started pouring over me. In Called, J.D. Walt
focused on the life of <b>Moses</b> and how God let Him wait until he was pretty old
to call him back to do His will. Walt ponders if this was to strip him of
self-assuredness or the thought that he was saving the people of Israel by his
own accord. Moses tried once to do just that. A man ended up dead, and Moses
was self-exiled. Walt had us read Phil. 3:4-10 and list our accomplishments- the
reasons why we think that we deserve to be called by God. He then asked what
they were compared to the glory of knowing Christ. Answer- our resumes are
NOTHING compared to the glory of knowing Christ.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">God then asked
my mom to email me about the story of<b> Namaan</b> in 2 Kings 5:13 and how he was
told to do a simple thing in order to be healed. My mom said “</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-TRAD;">But then his servants approached him and spoke with him. They said,
"My father, had the prophet only asked of you something great, you would
have done it, wouldn't you? Yet he told you, 'Bathe, and be clean...!' Like
Namaan, so often we think we are only serving God if we are doing something
great or if He asks great things of us. I think that He wants us to do the
mundane stuff in His name and then He (God) will be great.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> Then God brought the life of <b>Gideon</b>
to my awareness. The Lord chose Gideon in his weakness. God went on to tell him
“you have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel
would boast against me saying ‘My own strength has saved me’” (Judges 7:2). With
32,000 dwindling down to 300 men, God made it very clear that it was all His
own strength, not Gideon’s and not Israel’s. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> Confession: I wanted glory. I felt
able to do the work of God. Yes, I felt (and feel) called, but I also felt
capable. Now I know that I am weak, but I am capable because and ONLY because I
am equipped through Him.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Again,
God laid it on the heart of someone to share with me about the armor of God.
She shared to remember always to put on the armor of God and with Him we will
win the battle. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">So
here it goes. God is NOT unfaithful; He is <b>faithful</b>!
God is NOT unjust; He is <b>loving</b>. I
confess that through this weakness of not being able to provide for myself, I
have sought Him more than I think I have ever sought Him in my life. He is
providing through e</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; text-indent: 35.4pt;">ach prayer, each word, each interaction. </span><b style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; text-indent: 35.4pt;">Our God is a God
who provides! </b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; text-indent: 35.4pt;"> </span></div>

morning I was blessed to hear from two VIAs who came back from Albania. While
they were there, their time was split between homeschooling two children full
time and a brimming weekend of ministries through youth services and children’s
Bible school. It could not have been a more beautiful transition into what I
read in <i>Called: Following a Future Filled
with the Possible</i> later on. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">I opened the
devotional book and stared at the page entitled: <i>Called: From ‘How Much Do I Give?’ to ‘How Much Do I Keep?’. </i>That
is fitting, I thought. It went on to speak of the story of Mary- Mary who
listened to Jesus instead of helping her sister in the kitchen, Mary whose
brother was raised from the dead, Mary who poured a bottle of perfume that cost
her a year’s wages over Jesus’ feet. Since I have always been more of a Martha
type of a person, I have tried to pay attention in my life to the stories of
Mary. This story stands out to me, not only because of the expense of the
perfume that she poured on Jesus’ feet, but also because of all of the social
norms and rules she broke in order to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
It was not easy for her to come into where the men were eating, where her
sister was serving the meal. She interrupted the talk, dropped to her knees and
poured the perfume on His feet. She did not stop there; she dried His feet with
her hair, leaving the fragrance to float through the air and permeate the noses
of everyone in the room. If her act of interruption was not enough to get their
attention, the attacking smell to follow surely would have been! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">I am not saying
that it is good to constantly break social norms; oftentimes they are there for
a very good reason! But in those moments when I hear my Savior calling me to
break out of my seat to go up to a stranger and ask them if I can pray for
them, or to step out of my shift to help someone who is struggling to juggle
all of the tables in their zone across the restaurant, I pray that I will heed
His voice. I pray that I will pass on from solely being a Martha to being a
Mary. Just as the VIAs spoke of this morning, we are called to serve, but to
also go beyond that to obey. I pray that I will dote on my Savior just as “He
lavishes His love on us and calls us His children” (1 John 3:1, NIV). Marys do
not require a special profession; Marys require a special frame of mind and
heart. Will you join me in being a Mary today?</span></div>

my devotions this morning, praying for God to provide for others and for

your treasures in Heaven as one of the themes for my MK kiddos may be “treasure
boxes”. Right below this section, some blue highlighting caught my eye. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your
body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body
more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or
reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you
not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour

<span lang="EN-US">This time it is
not just the text that has stood out to me, or the fact that I have just been
listening to the song of some of those very birds two minutes ago while walking
the trash down to the curb, but rather something that I have written in the
margin of my Bible right next to this text. “Summer 2013,” it reads. I smile
with the memory that comes trickling into my brain with those words. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US">At the beginning
of last summer, I agreed to an unpaid internship with Shepherd’s Door part of
the Portland Rescue Mission, for more Social Work experience. I was nervous
when I took the position, as I knew that this 40 hour a week internship would
not allow me much time to find a job and pay for my expenses and future year of
college. God kept bringing this passage to mind, however, letting me know that
He knew my needs even before I did. Guess what happened? First, Shepherd’s Door
offered me a place to live with the internship allowing me to have all of my
food and lodging covered. Then, partway through the summer, they offered me a
part-time job to help with some of our other living expenses. That summer, God
brought me not only a wonderful Social Work experience, time with family, and
some additions to my family in Christ, but He also allowed me to have some
money for College the next year! Currently, I still have around $5,000 to
raise. How is this year any different? How can I worry? We serve a Good God!
Jehovah Yirah is His name! <o:p></o:p></span></div>

years since that night, my heart has been broken many times. Don’t worry; this
is not a depressing story or a country song, just wait for the redemption at
the end! No, these broken hearts were not over my male heart throbs, though I
did shed some of those tears as well, but rather in regards to countries,
people. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">You see, when
Doña Vivian spoke of guarding my heart, she spoke of guarding it from guys or
impure thoughts or actions that would not glorify God, she did not speak of the
fact that you leave a little part of your heart in every place that you live,
with every person that you love. As I write this, my heart lies in four
continents. God has blessed me with friends, with the ability to study abroad,
with the ability to serve in churches. With the joy of every smile at meeting
someone new comes the tears of having to say goodbye. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">I was pondering
this while sitting on the porch of my sister’s apartment in Honduras. I was
asking God why once again my heart had to break, why once again I had to realize
what it was like to desire to live in Barcelona, Honduras, Indiana, Oregon,
Washington, Iowa, and Uganda all at the same time. Why I could not be there for
every event in my best friend’s life. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">He gave me an
answer! As it started to rain-shine (when God lets drops fall out of a
beautifully sunny sky), He reminded me of a piece of artwork that I saw in the
Shepherd’s Door when working there last summer. No, it was not a painting; they
were two vases filled with broken pieces of plates. I thought that they were beautiful, but I
often wondered why they were there. Then one day, I overheard my supervisor
speaking to some of the new ladies that were entering the program. She
mentioned that they were on the mantel as Ebenezers. Yes, the ladies were
broken just like the plates, but God could redeem that and transform it into
something beautiful. Those plates had a purpose! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">Yes, I am a
cracked crystal glass around a broken felt heart, but God can redeem me and
transform me into who He wants me to be. God reminds me of the beautiful
memories and friendships that I have in each of the places that I have lived. I
would not change it for the world, and neither would He. He is going to use my
brokenness. He is going to use my tears. He is going to use my experiences. He
is going to use those relationships. Praise our Father because He is a God who
does not waste; He redeems! <o:p></o:p></span></div>

who guides me in the Child Survival Program. We work with around 40 children
ages 0-3 and their mothers making sure that they are surviving and thriving
physically, spiritually, socio-emotionally, and cognitively. On a practical
level this looks like visiting the homes of the mothers and doing short lessons
with them, doing monthly skills training, monthly discipleship, and other
activities ensuring that the mothers have the community and assets that they
need in order to help their family survive. The above picture shows one of our
mothers working on a chore chart with her three year old daughter helping to
teach responsibility. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

celebrated the last week and a half of February by completing our rural
homestay with a host family in Kapchorwa, Uganda near the Kenyan border. I
learned so much more than just how to milk a cow from my host family and my
host village. This week not only taught me about the importance of humility as
I relearned seemingly simple tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and cutting
vegetables, but also taught me the importance of being present with a family. I
am amazed time after time how the family of Christ can be found all over the
world. Situated in a little village on top of a mountain, I found a community
that cared for each other as Christ cares for individuals and shares with each
other as Christ called the Church to do. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">I want to encourage
us to do the same. In Philippians 2, God encourages us to be united with other
believers being “one in Spirit and purpose” (v.2). We do not have to be half
way around the world to serve Christ. He calls us first and foremost to be a
community as loving and humble as He was (see Philippians 2). <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US">What does it matter if our name is Sally,
George, or Serena? When I was young, I always thought that names were just
random names that were significant to the parents at the time of the child’s
birth. As I have grown, I have learned a little more about the importance of
the name that each child receives. You never know if you name your child
Serena, she might actually turn out to be “serene” like my mother. With this in
mind, beware of naming children Jezebel or Hitler. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"> While
teaching a lesson at Compassion on attachment through making a baby book, we
gave mothers the task of writing out the meaning of the name that they had
given their child. Though many did not know at the moment, when they asked
their families about it, the found great significance.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US"> While spending some of my time in rural
homestay, I was reminded once again of the importance of a name here in Uganda.
Names depict experiences and realities that were happening at the time of your
birth. One person I met had a name that meant “the moment when the visitor
comes.” When I asked the mother about it, she told me that someone had come to
visit them the moment the baby was born.
Similarly, a child’s name can be affected by the child that they follow.
If they follow a set of twins, they have a particular name. The importance of
the child’s name continues on to adulthood as a circumstance such as having a
set of twins, changes a name forever. A mother’s name immediately changes from
“Marie” to “Nalongo”, or a father’s name from “Petros” to “Ssalongo.” On
another note, when I spoke to a Muslim who had converted to Christianity, he
mentioned that they changed their name to mark the event and to show that he is
a new person. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-US">What is our
name? What is the meaning behind it? In Romans 9:26 it says that “we will be
called ‘sons of the living God’.” How amazing that our name changes as well! We
have had an experience, an event that has changed our name forever, even that
name will be written in the book of life (See Revelations 2)! Even more important,
who is Jesus? He is Emanuel- God is with us!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"> I
stared at the bullet mark in her arm and the straight emotionless but beautiful
face as she shared of being stolen from her home at twelve years of age. No,
they did not take her twin sister, because her brother begged for her, but one
person had to be the sacrifice. They didn’t trust her to not run away, however,
so they brought her back to her home and killed her mother in front of her to
give her shame. This was the least of the heart-throbbing truths that she and the
five other ex-captives told, but still it left a weight the size of the bowling
ball that I accidentally dropped when bowling against my Grandfather in my
stomach. <i>How can she say it without
emotion?</i> <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"> The
war that started around 1986 devastated Northern Uganda. It still has not
officially stopped. How did I never hear about this? When Museveni took over
the Ugandan government, Western Uganda and Northern Uganda began their
conflict. A man named Joseph Kony and his sister started a rebellion movement
called the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) to take the government back for the
North. His way of doing it, however, consisted of stealing children from
several villages in the North to either form part of the army, be the wives of
the soldiers, or both. Stories of the atrocities the LRA’s actions include
rape, murder, cutting off lips to make people in a perpetual “smile”, cutting
off noses, and other forms of torture that have the name of Kony rivaling the
evil dripping from the name of Hitler. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"> The
hurt did not stop just with these acts, unfortunately. Because of hateful thing
that the LRA was known for, on return to their villages and homes, these women
were met with contempt, fear, and rejection. Their community did not know how
to respond to them, how to help them heal, how to heal themselves. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"> Despite
the evil that these women have lived through, however, here they are standing
in front of me as a testimony of their strength and God’s grace. Instead of
seeing the death and the evil, I saw the smiles on their faces as they
interacted with each other. Instead of the broken community that they had to
consider their own, I saw the community that they had formed in Amani (the
project that taught them to sew and helped them form a healing group). Instead
of the wounded skin and torn hearts, I saw the beautiful creativity that went
into every bag, card, and necklace that they made. Truly God makes all things
new! </span></div>

Wow! When you let God set the pace, you better hold on. That is what I am learning! After starting my Placement at Compassion International's site in Lugazi, I feel as if time has been moving in fast forward. My head is reeling from the quick motions and all of the language that it is trying to take in, yet, I honestly cannot complain. I asked God to take the reins, now I just have to hold onto the horse :).<br />
<br />
In Lugazi, I am working with the Child Survival Program which works with children ages 0-3 and their mothers on surviving and thriving as they learn about God and meet outcomes in the Spiritual, Cognitive, Physical, and Socio-emotional levels. God has blessed me with a wonderful supervisor, Aunt Racheal, and Director, Uncle Johnson (they call people Aunt and Uncle out of respect here. Not too different than the missionary world :).) They, along with the whole Compassion team, are incredible to work with, very welcoming and enjoyable.<br />
<br />
I have learned to value time as it comes and goes in quick and slow spurts. I was able to on Wednesday of last week bring the devotion (more like preaching :)) for all of the youth (around 30 people). I learned that we have to stay connected to God at all times as we may be given just ten minutes to prepare a 30 minute presentation. I am so thankful that God offers us His Holy Spirit to speak through us and for us!<br />
<br />
I have been blessed with being able to struggle through learning some of the language of Luganda. I love the laughter that it brings them when I mess up :). It makes it so much easier to just take the whole learning process in stride. Mwasuzotia BaNiabo e BaSsebbo! <br />
<br />:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-58748429038529958692014-01-11T20:10:00.001-08:002014-01-11T20:10:38.875-08:00Letting God Set the Pace I was reading in Jesus Calling the other day about complete trust in God also including trusting His time, not trying to force everything to work out before He has it planned resulting in us getting a counterfeit of what He has for us. I honestly have really struggled with this concept. I like to plan and organize, a wonderful trait that comes from my mother :). It has proved time and time again to be a blessing, but in the area of trust, it becomes a challenge. This is my challenge to myself and to you as I am in Uganda. Know that God is in control (Romans 8:31, Ps. 46:1-3, Luke 1:37, Ps 56:3-4 and so many more)! I am excited to enjoy the process of life as I spend time trusting in His Presence!<br />
<br />
Here is how God has shown His presence so far: On the way over to Uganda (I have arrived safely! Thank you for prayers!), I was blessed to sit by one individual on each plane ride who I was able to speak to about adventures ahead, what to expect, and Christ. I hope that I was as much a blessing to them as they were to me!<br />
<br />
Stepping off of the plane in Kampala, I was checked through customs by someone who had studied at the UCU school that I am studying at here in Mukono. He was such an encouragement as he told me a little bit about the grounds and the people.<br />
<br />
I was greeted by a land that is VERY similar to Honduras! It is crazy how much Africa can be like Central America topographically. I feel very much at home with the climate, the people (still learning the culture though :S, more embarrassing stories to follow, I am sure :D), and the night noises. The night noises remind me of Olancho: Humanity competing with nature, a mixture of loud music being drowned out by the cadence of crickets, frogs, and locust. <br />
<br />
All of the girls that I am studying here with (especially Betty :)), have been a huge encouragement as they are going through the same process as I am. We are all excited and nervous! <br />
<br />
And now I might be late for Church, so more to come with photos!:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-80098562574990662892014-01-06T16:28:00.001-08:002014-01-06T16:37:59.021-08:00Christmas in Cold MexicoWe arrived to my parent's home in Mexico late on December 27th. After so many hours in the car we welcomed the ability to walk into a house- our new house. Honestly, it is a little bit strange to be in a Spanish-speaking country with my parents and not have it be Honduras. Though Saltillo is very different from Honduras, it has been such a blessing to see where my parents have been called. God has so blessed their ministry here by bringing them couples to work with to start Bible studies and small groups. I am so proud of them!<br />
<br />
And as my sister shows in her post, our time was full of puzzles, food, fun, and... well... um.. randomness :D "<span style="background-color: white; color: #37404e; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">So...my night: I went to heat up some dinner, and the plate split in half, so my planned meal of stroganoff became a bowl of cereal and a little salad. I wanted dressing on my salad, and </span><a data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/user.php?id=518745604&extragetparams=%7B%22directed_target_id%22%3A0%7D" href="https://www.facebook.com/tita.dunbar" style="background-color: white; color: #3b5998; cursor: pointer; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; text-decoration: none;">Tita Dunbar</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #37404e; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;"> was kind enough to pull out the bottle of Ranch. It was empty. I threw it away and looked for another bottle of dressing. We had Italian still in the fridge. I pulled it out: only a few drops of dressi</span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #37404e; display: inline; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">ng left. I put what I could on my salad and decided it was healthier that way anyway. Later, I went down to grab a mini cinnamon roll (made out of leftover pie crust) for dessert. It was stuck to the bottom of the pan, so I ran a blade underneath to loosen it. It loosened. Two cinnamon rolls shot out of the pan, into the air, and between the counter and the stove. Ordinarily, this wouldn't be such a big deal, but there is about a quarter-inch of space between the siding on the counters and the stove. There's no room to move the stove. Tita and I spent about 1/2 an hour maneuvering with her thinner fingers, a broom handle, and a pair of tongs before we were finally able to get both cinnamon rolls out and into the open again. And then we realized that the top of the broom handle had fallen off in that space, so we had to maneuver again. Apparently I was not supposed to eat tonight...- Charith</span>":) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-61417654413625096572012-03-26T13:17:00.001-07:002012-03-26T13:17:27.094-07:00God's given opportuties...A few Mondays ago in CaFE y TEologia, Paola, one of the girls who attends, threw out a thought. LEAP OF FAITH. What does this mean? We chewed on this thought for a little while. Then she made a comment about needing to write down what happens in our walk with God. Here it goes; my prayer is that one of these stories will bless you today!<br />
<br />
This last weak. (March 19-25) <br />
<br />
God, thankyou for the opportunities that You have given me to talk to people about You! I am sorry that I have not taken advantage of all of them! Please help me grow in faith and trust in You! <br />
<br />
Living day to day... God has given me two opportunities to talk with two young ladies on the metro on two separate opportunities about Him. We talked about forgiveness, commitment, and radicalness. I do not want to pretend that I made all of the right decisions. I feel as though I said some things incorrectly, but my hope is that the Holy Spirit will work on their minds and hearts- that He will change the "estupidezes" that I may have said into a searing flame to bring them to Him.<br />
<br />
This last Wednesday, God had placed it on my heart to buy some bread or provide for someone in need. I was walking to class in the morning, praying that God would show me who He wanted me to give to, when a man literally walked up to me and asked me for money. It could not have been more clear! I ran into two issues, however. I only had a 20 Euro and 6 centimo on me. Do I give him the 20? I said to him " What I can do is buy you some food." He aswered back with "WHAT?!?" So I asked him what he wanted the money for. He replied that he needed a place to sleep tonight. So I (please forgive me Lord!) told him that I could only give him the 6 centimos that I had. Thankyou Lord for answering my prayer so quickly! Help me to learn to give my all. Should I given the 20? Would he have used it incorrectly? <br />
<br />
One thing that I know, I have learned many lessons! <br />
<br />
Friday night, God gave me the opportunity to share about His compassion and character with the kids at JPC. Thankyou Lord! It went wonderfully! Of course there are always a few things that go wrong (that cause you to laugh later, such as throwing a plastic cup at someone to make them be quiet ;)), but all in all, it ran smoothely. My prayer is that Jesus would draw the kids closer to Him so they can experience His sweet nature. That they may grow in their relationship with Him and through mimicking His character, they would draw others to Him!:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-2708831794901890842012-03-22T07:10:00.002-07:002012-03-22T07:10:33.091-07:00JPC... The next morning, we
(the counselors) woke up early the next day in order to have a devotional as
the leadership group before waking up the kids. After this and prayer, we woke
the kids up around 8:45 for the “Buenos dias.” This was the early morning game
time before breakfast to wake us up. This morning, it consisted of a few songs
as a group (gorilla, and chipi chipi). This got us all moving and ready to eat!
After breakfast, we had the first service in which the song leaders (Isaac and
his wife Nancy) made a song called Nivel II and in which Isaac preached. He
spoke on what Nivel II truly meant for Christians, giving the examples of
Moses, Joseph, Paul, and Schumy (fictitious character). He spoke of the
difference between our owning our own decisions and giving them completely to
Christ. We then spoke about this to our mini-groups. I was blessed to co-lead a
group with Joel, one of the youth pastors (Our group: Nerrea, Ana, Adam, Ruben,
Nico, and Mircea). The kids in our group were pretty quiet but they were very
sincere! </div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% white; margin-left: -4.5pt; text-align: justify;">
After
this service, we ran outside for group games! Here we played the game of Super
Berea Bros. (you can imagine what is entailed <span style="font-family: Wingdings;"><span>J</span></span>). Brew and Jordi set
up this group game to be like the Super Mario Bros. video game, filled with
levels, lives, and coins to collect. The team that saved the princess and had
the most points won. The adventures and challenges ranged from making a cookie
travel from your forehead to your mouth with using only your facial muscles all
the way to balancing 3 cans of Coke on top of a basketball. If I had to guess,
I believe that all the kids had a blast! </div>

Along
with Hannah and Judith, I had helped plan a prayer walk full of different
stations of symbolism and prayer for the 2nd velada. We had a
station of prayer for petitions turned to praise that the kids wrote on post-it
notes and placed on a world map; one of prayer for family members and friends
that you wanted to talk to about Christ; one of writing down something (a
struggle, a sin, a need…) that you wanted to give to Jesus that they wrote down
on a paper heart, pasted to a mural of a cross, and painted red to symbolize the
blood of Christ covering it; one section was for creative adoration; and one
last one for writing an Ebenezer on a stone to take with you (It could be a
memory, verse, promise, or anything that God placed on their hearts). After we
set up the stations, the nerves kicked in! The three of us were nervous about
how the kids would respond, despite our team’s efforts to reassure us that it
was beautiful and that it would turn out fine.</div>
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;"><span> </span>Because of this, we
decided to bring this night before Lord as a team. We all prayed that God would
calm our nerves and that above all, His will be done. God is AMAZING! He
completely took our simple little plans, hushed the hyperactive kids, and
touched hearts! The whole room, dimly lit with candles and smelling like a
mixture of paint, candlewax, and pinesol, was filled with the sound of soft
music and quietly whispered prayers. It was beautiful! We finished the evening
with a love letter from our Heavenly Father made by a group called conecta con
Dios (<a href="http://conectacondios.jesus.net/?/1/la-carta-de-amor-del-padre.html">http://conectacondios.jesus.net/?/1/la-carta-de-amor-del-padre.html</a>).
Honestly, there were quite a few sniffles and tears around the room. People
were touched! On a personal note, I was touched as well! After the video,
Esther (one of our campers) came up to me asking me for prayer. After she
confided in me her fear of not being a good enough witness, I prayed with her.
Shortly after, the Holy Spirit used her as she prayed for me! Ahhh!! God is so
good!</span><br />

I had my first case of the stomach flu yesterday right in the middle of class! Not fun! Thankfully, teachers and little old men on the street are very understanding!:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-16628962245011216742012-02-09T12:19:00.000-08:002012-02-21T06:30:32.969-08:00The wonderful tales of the South- Andalucia<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
I was very blessed to be able to take an educational trip down to the southern portion of Spain to study the art and architecture of some of the most famous buildings in the world <span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span> (Ok, maybe not all of them are world famous, but they seem like they should be.)</div>

Our First stop <strong>Granada.</strong></div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Granada is a beautiful, cold city nestled in a little valley surrounded by mountains. It was first named after Pomegranates that come from the area as the decorative “do not drive here” posts show. Besides being serving the purpose of protecting the civilians from crazy drivers, these iron pomegranate-topped posts serve the ironic multipurpose of tripping those very civilians that they are supposed to protect! Thankfully, after 4 of us tripped, we learned to look down when we walked. </div>

Granada is known for two things that we were able to see: the Albayzin (old Arabic neighborhood) and the Alhambra (old Caliphate palace). These pictures will depict our time there. My favorite part of these two tours, the color! The Mosaics and oranges everywhere held incredible color! </div>

The next morning we were able to visit the Cartuja (monastery) and the Cathedral of Granada in order to compare Renaissance and Baroque styles. The easiest way I can depict the difference between these two styles is by having you think of the style that my mom loves (most likely your mom as well ;))- structured, clean-cut, tranquil- versus the state of the room of very busy college student who does not care about cleaning his room- shocking when you first walk in, but you when you stay looking, you will find treasures. Here are some pictures of each of those. </div>

The first night in Sevilla was INCREDIBLE! We walked across the whole city to find our way to the river. We were able to walk along the riverwalk and actually ran into a band that was practicing. The horn, trumpets, and drums made this trip worth it all by themselves!</div>

<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>After that fun, we woke up the next morning to go visit the Roman ruins of Italica. Can you imagine living in a house like that?!?</div>

<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Speaking of the Palacio de los Reales, they had pavos reales (peacocks) as their pets. When we first walked around, we only ran into a few females, but after taking a tour of the palace and walked around for a little bit, we ran into a lady feeding the birds. She fed them bread as all sorts of birds including several male and female peacocks flocked towards her. She very kindly offered us some bread to feed them as well. <span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span> We happily accepted, and then had two funny things happen. A friend was “attacked” by a duck (it just got too close) as she was trying to feed the peacocks. Another friend and I told her not to be afraid and that nothing would happen to her just one minute before I fed a male peacock. That in itself was fine, but then another male peacock got too close. Lo and behold the fought and one took flight, hitting me in the face with its tail feathers as it tried to escape<span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span>! </div>

After escaping the peacocks and the maze in the Palacio Alcazar, we walked around the old “barrio Judio”, and we able to get lost for a little while. The streets we filled with little shops, flowers, and white and yellow walls everywhere. Thankfully, we did not stay lost for long! We stumbled upon our very own “Don Juan” <span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span>. </div>

We then walked around a little bit more, before finding a little restaurant and eating a full course meal. My meal was a pretty typical one in Spain, consisting of bread, vegetable soup, tortilla espanola (like a potato quiche), and flan. My friend, on the other hand, because she was not very hungry, ordered just dessert. This is what appeared! </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
The Cathedral in Sevilla is one of the biggest Gothic Cathedrals in the world, if it is not the biggest. Here we studied some of the beautiful Gothic Architecture, but to confuse poor little students like us, there is a little mix of every type of art and Architecture inside (even including an Arabic tower (Giralda) and patio). </div>

After our free afternoon we made our way to Cordoba- the most magical of the three cities. I don't know what made me like it so much. The part of the town that we stayed in was right across from the Mesquita. It was old, beautiful and quiet! I think what made it the most incredible was the sunset over the river as we arrived. As beautiful as buildings are, God's creating always wins! <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd8BxE3ezveYkkqLMliz9Pn5e8doeMjQOGIRBydl9VLYcxTYUsMBTEubga8gabelMXAzMyhUt30gplL27T8snD7BZRMh2PXpjWgCRSQHYq07-q-yUrkU4FtAJlOEEVjTxfLkWRRu6EDSQ/s1600/trip+to+Andalucia+383.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" lda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd8BxE3ezveYkkqLMliz9Pn5e8doeMjQOGIRBydl9VLYcxTYUsMBTEubga8gabelMXAzMyhUt30gplL27T8snD7BZRMh2PXpjWgCRSQHYq07-q-yUrkU4FtAJlOEEVjTxfLkWRRu6EDSQ/s320/trip+to+Andalucia+383.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZikIe-GmufcerZJ6Vov-OK7Zcj5lIfGkJVIgRZRPmEYkz8q6BzyckZaze79kEDqs8b_MhAg2UyEbSt5K1ay1F1h6E0la1OgSFOBdwbLfIK4i88ytnl1WNNTGrD_0L_nWH58K6TtreOhA/s1600/trip+to+Andalucia+387.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" lda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZikIe-GmufcerZJ6Vov-OK7Zcj5lIfGkJVIgRZRPmEYkz8q6BzyckZaze79kEDqs8b_MhAg2UyEbSt5K1ay1F1h6E0la1OgSFOBdwbLfIK4i88ytnl1WNNTGrD_0L_nWH58K6TtreOhA/s320/trip+to+Andalucia+387.JPG" width="320" /></a>Isn't it beautiful!! </div>

The Mesquita was a big mix of Arabic and Barroque styles. They were both EXQUISITE apart, but together? It was too much! It was almost as if there was the Mosque, then someone dropped a Cathedral inside. It was shocking! But honestly, even though I disliked the mix, the arquitecture was beautiful, filled with horseshoe arches, color, and different building materials. Apparently the people who built the Mosque used some of the old Roman ruins as building material. The whole mosque was filled with collumns of different colors and sizes. It was so pretty! </div>

Then followed the Jewish neighborhood and Synagogue. The Jewish neighborhood was filled with flowers- even in the winter! Our Professor said that in the spring they have a festival of the flowers where the whole neighborhood is completely filled! People then go and visit everyones patios, they eat a little, drink a little, sing a little, and just have fun together. </div>

It was BEAUTIFUL! It was all so clean and nice. The only thing that I had to get used to was the shower- the doors did not close of the shower thus a towell at the entryway is REQUIRED!</div>:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-57072418895378920322012-01-19T08:26:00.000-08:002012-01-19T08:26:13.265-08:00Tips learned from day two2 :).Ahorita is a "Mexican" word. <br />
I told one of the men working here at the hotel that I would go get my roommate "ahorita" so that she could eat and so they could start clearing the meal. He very kindly grabbed my arm and said " ahorita, no. Ahora. Aqui no decimos "ahorita". Eso es de Mexico, y no hablamos con los Mexicanos." He was really sweet about it though! So now I can pass for Gringa, Honduran, and Mexican :). <br />
<br />
The Metro Door is not like an elevator door:<br />
I rode the metro for the first time! :). We all went together with our Director to learn how to use it and see how to get to the University on Tuesday afternoon. First we had to buy a pass. I was able to go through that with very little trouble. I did not even trip as I was walking through the entrance doors that take your ticket! We then arrived at the platform to enter the subway/metro it was beeping. The eleven of us ran to get on. There are quite a few seconds before they close the doors, we were told. unfortunately, the doors started to close on me! I put out my hands to keep them open while I walked through, like an elevator. Unfortunately again, elevators are not as carnivorous as metros are. They do not open once they are closing. So me, on the outside, and our directora on the inside tried to open the door using the handle. The driver apparently did not approve and I was stuck on the outside as my classmates rode out with my directora pointing to the next station. There I was left alone on the platform waiting for the wall to explode and suck me into another world like the characters of "Narnia". I survived the first ride though! :). <br />:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-3696440391034883472012-01-18T06:43:00.000-08:002012-01-18T06:43:01.199-08:00<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">

This will be our home for the next week, and get this... the key is a magnet! It is the coolest thing ever! It doesn't open other doors thoughm, :( :). Our Director told us to try our hardest not to fall asleep until after 8 at night. Easier said than done when the hour difference is 7 hours. :) All of our eyes were glossy, but I think we managed. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: purple;">We had a few "classes" of safety and things to know about the city today. We also had a lot of time to explore and walk around. Honestly, I love being able to walk! It is beautiful and so clean!(except for the dog droppings everywhere...). We were able to walk by one park and quite a few stores. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: purple;">The two new experiences I had today were: changing money and eating! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: purple;">First with changing money, I learned how to use a european atm. I am still not used to the currency. 2 euros is a coin then the 20 is a bill. They are so itsy-bitsy and cute! But the exchange rate is pretty terrible :(. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: purple;">The eating is the biggest change. I was expecting pretty small portions, but far apart. Far from what I found out. Lunch was not too different; we had two sandwiches (one cheese and one ham... or as some of made it- mixed) and a fruit. Supper was the big difference. We all walked in to supper at about 8:15 pm. As soon as we sat down, we were served a full plate of a potato quiche and salad. It was delicious! Then as soon as I ate that completely, thinking that was everything was finished, they brought out another full plate of sausage and potato/beans. I very full and extremely tired after the first plate "had to leave to find my roomate :)". I found out later that there is another full dessert course as well! All I can say is: DELICIOUS! :). </span>:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791620726773365772.post-48897330308182512162012-01-17T14:31:00.000-08:002012-01-17T14:31:53.373-08:00First days... Jetlag/ orientation!<span style="color: purple;"><strong>Hey everybody! </strong></span><br />
<span style="color: purple;"><strong>I finally am trying this. We will see how it goes. Okay. First day, Monday January 16. </strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: purple;"><strong>We arrived at 7 a.m. to a dark and cold Barce. Thankfully, a few things worked out perfectly: I met some fellow study abroaders before arriving here, we weren't horribly interrogated, and we had people here to pick us up. To add to this was the literal rays of sunshine peeping through the sky when we arrived at the hotel. </strong></span>:) guess whohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13283687422581300411noreply@blogger.com0
